Participants and sponsors of Timaru’s annual soap box derby have helped raise more than $11,000 for local organisations.
Ampss 101, Timaru Community Christmas Dinner and the South Canterbury Mountain Bike Club Inc. are the three recipients of the funds raised during the 2023 Timaru Soap Box Derby.
Ampss 101 received $9000, the Christmas dinner received $1400 and the mountain bike club received $1000.
Timaru Soap Box Derby organiser Richard Brown said they aim to donate towards something physical for the community to see and make use of.
“Everyone was happy and stoked to receive the funds, and it’s good to see all the funds go to local organisations,” Brown said.
“Ampss 101’s work in the community is underfunded, and we’re always fundraising for mental health. The more we can help them, the more they can help the community and those seeking help.
“We like what the Christmas dinner does every year for people less fortunate and people who have no one else during Christmas. They bring people together, which is what the festive season is all about.
“The mountain bike club are fundraising for a new pump track at the Scenic Reserve, and we thought we would help them out.”
Brown said there was a lot of positive feedback during their committee debrief following the Timaru Soap Box Derby.
“Everyone was really happy and plans are already well underway for next year’s Soap Box Derby. We will make a few tweaks to our health and safety because we’re on a new track now.”
Brown thanked the community for their support and said the organising committee look forward to raising more funds locally.
